Sacred Steel's last album, 2009's Carnage Victory, sucked, so my hopes were not high for 2013's The Bloodshed Summoning. As it turns out, this new album is terrific and a huge improvement over its predecessor. The band attacks the 14 new songs (plus a Misfits cover) with angry enthusiasm, straying into Thrash Metal on more than one occasion. The lyrics are still anti-Christian but not with the over-the-top bile of Carnage Victory, rather the topics are broader and the music is given room to breathe. The vocals of Gerrit Mutz will continue to divide opinion as he hardly has what you'd call a "classic" Metal voice. On The Bloodshed Summoning he goes back and forth between a low growl, similar to David Wayne which is decent to listen to, and a higher register warble like Warrel Dane, that gets annoying after a bit. The music on The Bloodshed Summoning is the album's strength and is a cross between the proto-Thrash of Metal Church's first two albums ("Storm of Fire 1916" and the excellent "Perversion of the Scriptures") and the quasi-Progressive Metal of Sanctuary's Refuge Denied ("When the Siren Calls" and "Crypts of the Fallen.") Mutz' singing seems to be the main sticking point but if you can get past them, some quality Metal awaits on The Bloodshed Summoning.
