...And Death Said Live is the third album from Finland's Mors Principium Est, a band whose style is unequivocally Swedish Melo-Death. Dark Tranquility and In Flames are the obvious comparisons and Mors Principium Est stray little from the formula pioneered by those bands. The playing is competent, at times even exciting, but no one song possesses a big enough hook to make it stand out. The guitars are crunchy, the keyboards melodic and the vocals, mainly rasps with occasional guttural growls, neither add nor detract much. The appeal of this sub-genre continues to elude me but I can appreciate the quality, if not the originality, of ...And Death Said Live. Fans who like their Melo-Death simple and straightforward should view this one as a safe blind purchase, but if you're looking for something different, you'll need to do so elsewhere. |
