Powerplay is the ninth album from Shakra, something that came as a surprise as I had never heard of them before now. What was less of a surprise was the fact they are from Switzerland as each time I listened to Powerplay, I was reminded of Krokus. Like their better known countrymen, Shakra plays a very melodic Heavy Metal with some pronounced Hard Rock elements. Tracks like "Life Is Now" and "The Mask" are full-on Metal anthems, not unlike Warrior Soul, with a big sound and riffs to fill it. The rest of the album is more mid-paced, with a Hard Rock vibe running through the songs. Most are decent but none rise to the level of spectacular. The ballads "Wonderful Life" and "Too Good to Be True" are the sort of sappy, bland songs that Stryper rode to fame in 1986 and can easily be skipped. Powerplay is no revelation but I've heard a lot of bands do a lot worse at this style than Shakra.
