There was a time when Stratovarius held high the Finnish flag in the world of Euro Power Metal. Then came others, like Sonata Arctica and Nighwish, who took Stratovarius' lead and eventually surpassed them in popularity. It seems we have come full circle in 2013. Those other bands have strayed from the original formula and their popularity has waned but Timo Kotipelto, Jens Johansson, et al are still plugging away, staying true to their roots and sounding as good as ever on 2013's Nemesis.

Sure, you've heard this before but Euro Power Metal is hardly the genre you should be following if innovation rings your bell. No, this is a style in which playing well-written, ultra-catchy songs is the name of the game. Nemesis features some excellent examples in "Halcyon Days" and "Dragons." Great choruses, keyboards dueling with guitars and double-kick drums are blended perfectly ensuring you'll be singing along. There are some clunkers, songs where Stratovarius are "painting by numbers" too much but even these tracks aren't so bad you'll need to skip them. The album is keyboard heavy, at the expense of the guitars, something I wish was reversed. Either way, the melodies are infectious.

Nemesis covers old ground but at least Stratovarius, unlike some of their countrymen, know what the fans want and gives it to them. Fans of happy Power Metal will want to add this to their collections.
