Potential Threat SF is a Bay Area Thrash band, one that's been around since the heyday, having formed in 1986, but has never risen above the level of opening act for more well-known acts like Testament, Slayer, Nuclear Assault and others. As a result, their sound is consistent with that scene; a slow, crushing version of Thrash that is more pugilistic than speedy. Civilization Under Threat is their second full-length and their second to feature the word "threat" in the title. It is a typical example of Bay Area Thrash and stays well within the confines laid out 30 years ago. Low, bellowing vocals, heavy riffing and technically proficient solos abound. The lyrics are socio-political though more high-level than some others. Everything about Civilization Under Threat screams "not bad" which is not necessarily something you tend to scream. There is just nothing in the playing or the songwriting that sets Potential Threat SF apart. Sure, they can play and I'm sure the songs go over well live, but that can be said for countless other bands as well. Fans of Thrash, and the Bay Area sound in particular, aren't going to hate Civilization Under Threat, but they aren't going to be blown away, either.
