Review

I reviewed Toxic Holocaust's From the Ashes of Nuclear Destruction compilation a mere 6 months ago (July 15th, 2013, to be specific) and as I stated then, this band isn't shy about putting new product out to the masses. Chemistry of Consciousness is the band's fifth full-length and joins the myriad of other releases from Toxic Holocaust's 15 year history. Nothing much has changed in the band's sound; evil, dirty Thrash played at top speed is still the name of the game. The vocals, unlike some of the stuff on From the Ashes of Nuclear Destruction, are a proto-Death Metal growl with nary a high-pitched scream to be heard. As a result, the songs on Chemistry of Consciousness sound more like S.O.D. with a big pinch of Hardcore than early Slayer. Many of the songs are quite short with only "Rat Eater" clocking in at more than three minutes. The guitars are sharp, in a piece of broken, jagged glass sort of way, yet retain a good amount of melody so the songs are not just aural assaults. That doesn't mean you won't want to wade into the pit or break out the air guitar like I did every damn time "Out of the Fire" came on. Joel Grind and crew have really hit the sweet spot between writing catchy riff that are pleasing to the ear and simply trying to puncture your eardrums. Other tracks that standout include the aforementioned "Rat Eater," "Acid Fuzz" and "Deny the Truth." No one is going to accuse Toxic Holocaust of originality but that isn't the point. Chemistry of Consciousness is 28 minutes of old school, evil Thrash and a shit load of fun. Put it on and let it rip.
