Columbia's Guerra Total ("Total War" in Spanish) forgo the groove/thrash played by many of their South American contemporaries and go straight for the throat with some vicious, grimy Black/Speed metal on their fourth album, El Armagedón Continúa (The Armageddon Continues). Vocalist Demonslaught, who also abuses the bass, has a raspy croak that is low in the mix and drenched in echo, giving it an otherworldly sound. It isn't great but it doesn't take anything away, either. The drums are played at an unrelenting pace by Sick Punisher and Death Fiend strums so fast, his guitar probably smokes. At these speeds, there isn't a lot of definition between songs and they all sound sort of the same after a while but that makes them no less evil fun. Guerra Total clearly worships at the altars of Venom and Celtic Frost and carry the torch alongside current-day purveyors of Black/Speed Metal like Desaster and Witchgrave. El Armagedón Continúa isn't original but it is quite enjoyable. |
