It took me a while to hunt down this first release by US heavy metallers Cage - thumbs down on distribution (or lack of...) Two things quickly noticeable is that Cage play pure heavy metal, and also that the vocalist sings very high - a little bit too much in fact. If the vocals were a bit lower in the mix, it would be easier to appreciate the music which is almost a second-class citizen here. Ok maybe I'm exaggerating, but only slightly. The vocals turn me off a little bit here, trying to isolate the music I can hear something I should love, but factor in the vocals and *sometimes* it seems like they either don't fit (or are just plain too high as noted earlier.) Yet, the vocalist is pretty good and shows he can do the job, but there's just something wrong in how the vocals go (don't) with the music in some songs. On to the music - pretty much pure heavy metal showing a strong 80's Judas Priest influence with a little more modern ring to it. Some of the riffs on the album are pretty strong and catchy and sometimes very heavy, especially noticeable when not overshadowed by the vocals. The album presents a good mix of medium to fast-paced songs and except for a couple of songs, doesn't really get boring. I'd enjoy this a lot more if the vocals were just a little bit lower, but that's still an album that will get an occasional listen. Recommended to fans of the genre. |
