After five demos and two promotional EPs, Finnish Death Metal commandoes The Soul Exile, around since 2003, have released their sixth demo, carrying the title Reign of Terror. Reign of Terror contains four songs of "meat & potatoes" Death Metal. It's brutal, heavy and in-your-face, heavily blast beat-ridden and even relatively technical and well made so that one could enjoy it, at least in small doses. Suffocation is the name that comes to mind as a comparison for The Soul Exile's sound, with a bit of a modern core-ish vibe. An additional plus is the nicely audible bass parts that give an extra kick to their songs, adding more crushing heaviness to their Death Metal. The Reign of Terror demo unfortunately suffers from one remarkable problem; the songs tend to sound the same and the EP ends up like one faceless mass and you really don't know when one song ends and the next starts. More diversity would benefit The Soul Exile, so hopefully this is something they will consider when the time comes to record some new stuff. Not bad but not that impressive (yet) either. I will keep my ears out for them in the future though, that's for sure. |
