Finland has proved to be a great country for Metal music of all sorts, even Black Metal. The Black Metal scene in Finland is vast, with both terrific and shitty Black Metal acts, old and new.

HellSpirit has been around for about 10 years and falls easily into the former category. The band has recorded a couple of demos and one split, with Australian Black/Thrash band Nocturnal Graves (released in 2010 on Nuclear War Now! Productions) and they brought HellSpirit a bit of notoriety and paved the way for them to ink a deal with a new Finnish extreme underground label Saturnal Records in 2014.

Dawn Under Curse, the title of HellSpirit's debut album, was recorded in 2012 and was originally set to be released on the now defunct No Sign of Life label, but is finally getting the treatment it deserves. Stripped down, relatively raw and simple Black Metal is what this is, with some epic moments is created by the presence of keyboards (that are gladly kept to a minimum). At times, Hellspirit's music brings Barathrum's name to mind, while at others, Dark Funeral-like somber guitar melodies can be heard. Every instrument has been given lots of room to breathe and I am especially glad to hear the bass on this debut.

The fifth song, "Eternal Night," lasts over 11 minutes, which might scare many of you away and have you wondering, "what's the purpose of this filler song?" However, get ready for a surprise as this song is a true highlight. It flows nicely, from start to finish, and has no dull moments. One can easily hear that band has taken some time composing this track and has created a Black Metal epic.

Dawn Under Curse has me crossing my fingers and hoping HellSpirit continues down their chosen path in the future. May their future be pitch-black, in a good way.
