I've been following this band for years now, ever since their entertaining debut album, and even though their sophomore effort was somewhat disappointing, I kept them on my radar. Sanctus Infernum have an interesting take on the Doom/Death genre, in which they mix a definite Sabbathy doom-riff approach with death vocals and sometimes death-styled drum work. On the original album I was hoping they would find new ways to blend the sounds together, and they have done that some, but not in as revolutionary a manner as I hoped. This is heavier than the somewhat disappointing Martyr from '09, and the songs do show more variance and dynamic, but the band still has not come up with that many really first-rate riffs, and their songwriting does seem to rely on repetition a bit more than it should. Once again this band is solid, but not amazing. |
