Germany's Reaper has been around since 1984 (according to Metal-Archives) and over that 30 year span has released five full-length albums with 2014's An Atheist Monument the most recent. If you guessed a band that started in Germany in 1984 might sound a little like Accept, you'd be spot-on. Thundering bottom end, riffs galore and gravelly vocals bring to mind classics like Restless and Wild and Balls to the Wall though the songwriting is not nearly so strong. Highlights include "Of Sheep and Shepherds" with its driving bass line and smooth chorus, and "1943," yet another epic about the Battle of Stalingrad during World War II. Reaper does a great job of bringing the horrible events to life through their lyrics. Other songs are not as exciting and feel like retreads of stuff that's been done countless times before, like "Taste My Revenge."
An Atheist Monument is not going to score high on the originality scale but that probably won't matter to fans of 80s-era Accept, Grave Digger and Paradox. If those bands get your fists in the air, give Reaper a listen.
