Aaahhhhh Grave Digger….now this is one of those bands that you never have to wonder about what is in store for you when you throw this one in the CD player. Starting back in 1985 and through all 11 of their full-length releases (including this one) they have maintained a steady dose of traditional metal that combines killer guitar riffs with some extremely catchy songs. This continued quality is certainly not missing going into the new millennium with this release carrying on the proud tradition. The new album is a concept based on "The Ring of Nibelungs" by Richard Wagner which the band has split into four parts which include Rheingold, Valkyrie, Triumph-Glory-Agony and Twilight of the Gods. The album is filled to the breaking point with some extremely cool riffs that worm their way into your mind and have you banging your head before you even realize that you are doing it. The vocals are what you would expect from Grave Digger and for most people this is one of those times you either like them or hate them. They are not your normal perfectly clean vocals normally associated with the genre but they have that heavier edge to them which for the most part I really enjoy. I will admit however that when Chris Boltendahl tries to sing the slower tracks like track 5 "Maidens of War" the near growl thing he has going on does tend to be annoying and really detracts from the overall sound. Thankfully this is done on very few occasions so this complaint is very minor. Overall this is another worthy release by Grave Digger and certainly one that fans of the band will certainly want to pick up. If you are into the traditional metal sound this will certainly quench that thirst and have you cranking the stereo to the max…my neighbors can certainly attest to that…heh. Yet another excellent job by one of the best in the business. HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. |
