Hourswill is an eccentrically named band from Portugal that plays a Progressive style of Thrash Metal on their debut full-length Inevitable. Musically, there are some quite good riffs and the guitars have a very good tone. The rest of the band are right there with the guitars and Hourswill add some spoken word accents (like a speech from Hitler) to underscore the serious and political nature of the lyrics. Based on those things, I would have scored this album higher but the vocals are a problem. Hourswill employ both clean and harsh singing and I actually prefer the Death growls more, something not usually the case. The clean singing is fine but the vocal melodies are either accidentally or purposefully against the grain and don't mesh with the music very well. This means they range from mildly annoying to downright irritating. Whatever the reason, I found it a big hurdle to enjoying Inevitable and I would caution anyone to be prepared. Maybe you won't find them such a distraction and will be able to enjoy the music, but not me. |
