Ah, another band looking to soften my crusty old heart with some golden age-inspired, classic Heavy Metal, this time from the under-appreciated Raven and Exciter schools. Peru's Cobra wind themselves up and let loose in all directions with some Hard Rock-inspired Heavy Metal that's played fast, loose and about as unpretentious as you could ask for. I love that the songs all sound like they were recorded in one take and the high-pitched screams are loaded with echo, just like the old days when this was THE sound. Song titles like "Fallen Soldier," "Danger Zone" and "Rough Riders" evoke memories of a simpler time when bands stuck to straightforward topics that you didn't have to think much about. Nope, grab the air guitar and sidle up to the air microphone and yell along. "Beyond the Curse" is probably a little long for this style at 8:44 and doesn't really hold your attention but the aforementioned "Fallen Soldier" and the thrashy, Exciter-esque "To Hell" kick ass from start to finish. There's nothing remarkable about the songwriting or the lyrics but the energy and passion for old school of Heavy Metal are palpable and that's what makes To Hell so much fun. The band themselves sound like they are having as much fun playing as we are listening. That's a formula that will never go out of style. Throw on To Hell and get ready to rock. |
