Vanish is a Power/Progressive Metal band from Germany that plays the same style of music as Symphony X. The songs are driven by powerful guitars playing thundering riffs with keyboards that are omnipresent but supportive and in no way overpowering and vocals that are gritty yet clear and dynamic. Everything on Come to Wither, the band's second album, had me thinking of the monumental Symphony X album Iconoclast, with the exception of the songwriting, which is nowhere near as good. That isn't to say Vanish is a bad band, more how good Symphony X is. I hate to base a review simply on how similar a band is to another one but the similarities are undeniable. Vanish are quite talented and Come to Wither is a very good album, one I found myself tapping my foot to more often than not while it was on but it doesn't leave an indelible mark. Fans of Symphony X, Threshold, Anubis Gate, et al will certainly appreciate this album but it isn't going to supplant any classics at the top of those fans' lists. What does seem likely is that those established bands are looking at some stiff competition from Vanish in the future. |
