Johannes Tüllner started his one-man project Eternal Wisdom in 2005 and focused on writing songs about cabbalism, hermeticism and theosophy. Wrapping up these topics in his own burning passion to play all the instruments by himself certainly speaks of a high level of ambition! Having not heard his previous releases, ...Of Eternity (2010) and Meditation of the Cleansing Fire (2012), I cannot say how Johannes’ latest album, Pathei Mathos, compares to them. It’s still an achievement to make a one-man project sound like a full band, isn’t it? Johannes seems to be at home in the melodic Swedish Black/Death Metal scene pioneered by bands like Dissection, Necrophobic and Naglfar. Everything on Pathei Mathos speaks to the amount of time Johannes has sacrificed to make this album sound so captivating. He has a clear sense for striking and catchy melodies and knows how to create the kind of songs that grab people’s attention. The acoustic passages are very clever. The production on this album leaves something to be desired, especially drums. They should be more in the background, I think. Regardless of some minor flaws here and there, Pathei Mathos definitely deserves our attention. |
