This is one of those bands built around a shred guy, and I don't typically enjoy the work of shredders. But this is a lot less shred and much more straight-up US Heavy Metal with a few shred flourishes added on, making for a very enjoyable old-school album. DSG are heavy as hell, for one thing, with a solid, meaty guitar tone and some nice galloping riff-work. The leads are good, as you might expect, but they don't take over the proceedings, and stay part of the sound, rather than dominant. Another good thing is the vocal prowess of Damien Thorne wailer Warren Halvarson, who punches out his high-pitched, high-octane vocal lines with plenty of charisma and flair. Overall this is just a solid disc of catchy, punchy songs that remind me of classic Jag Panzer or Deadly Blessing. Well written, well produced, and executed with conviction and style. |
