Where Evil Follows is ex-Onward guitarist Toby Knapp's new band and if you are a fan of his prior work, the debut Portable Darkness is one you'll want to check out. Knapp knows his way around a fret board and is probably one of the most underrated guitarists in Heavy Metal today. His riffs are solid and sound fresh while his solos are things of beauty. Similar to his work with Onward, Where Evil Follows has a progressive bent though I hesitate to lump the band into the Progressive Metal genre. With the funky vocal lines and more than occasional flashes of speed I'm reminded of Labyrinth's Return to Heaven Denied but with more echo that gives it an 80s flavor that is undeniable. I'm not sold on bassist Dean Sternberg's vocals myself but I can see how many people will enjoy them. It took me a while to come around to singers like King Diamond and John Cyriis and, according to the band's Facebook page, that's what they were shooting for so maybe I need a little more time with it. Either way, fans of the old school should be checking out Portable Darkness and its honest-to-goodness Heavy Metal. |
