Spain’s Wargaz is a melodic Death Metal band and Skiamachy is their debut full-length and follows on the heels of their self-titled EP from 2013. According to the band’s Facebook page the members were formerly in various Folk Metal bands and that definitely comes through in the Wargaz sound. The vocals are low Death growls (Cookie Monster if he was a serious artist) and the tempos only occasionally reach hyper speed. Wargaz prefer a somewhat slower pace and that allows the melodies of the songwriting, as well as the occasional nature sound effects, to come through quite clearly. Wargaz makes me think of a Death Metal version of a band like Finsterforst just a bit. The playing is clean and tight, the vocals sincere and not pukey and the songwriting consistent but not spectacular. Skiamachy is a decent effort that shows a lot of promise. |
