House of Atreus is an epic Death Metal band from Minneapolis, MN that focuses on things like Greek tragedy the way their neighbors to the north, Ex Deo, focuses on Roman-inspired topics. They sound quite a lot like their Canadian brethren as well with a huge sound made up of thick, suffocating guitars, pummeling drums and furious vocals. The Spear and Ichor that Follows is the title of the band's debut full-length and it is a pretty cool one. It is what drew my attention in the first place. The music is also cool but not nearly as memorable as the title. I've been listening for a week waiting for one of the songs to really grab me but none has. The riffs are very good and carry a lot of weight and House of Atreus does a nice job of blending melody with the harshness of the spiteful singing which creates a decent amount of atmosphere but I still can't tell one song from another. I like The Spear and the Ichor that Follows and so will you if Death Metal with marching riffs vs. the typical Thrash-based songwriting of Death Metal sounds like something that would whet your appetite. The songwriting is generic but the bones of something better are in place. |
