Chilean Death Metal trio Gravestone (formerly known as Decomposed) was formed nearly 20 years ago and Ancient Spirits is their debut full-length album released at the end of November 2014. What we have here are eight songs of relatively stripped down, amateurish, old school Death Metal that unfortunately suffers from a non-professional production. The sound of the drums as well as that of the guitars is terribly thin and not powerful enough to carry the songs. It's a pity because the album has moments that would have gotten more appreciation from Death Metal fans with a better production. A song like "Pain Overcomes the Tolerance" is basically pure early Death worship and with a heavier production would have stood out as an ace in the deck. Gravestone do have some potential making it all the more unfortunate that bad production kills the overall positive impression. |
