Finland's Ranger is a band I've been following since their exciting Knights of Darkness EP back in 2013. I love old-school Speed Metal and Ranger seemed to have their collective fingers directly on the pulse of what made bands like Exciter and Razor so much fun. With Where Evil Dwells Ranger has become, more or less, a Thrash band with simple, staccato riffing and careening out of control vocals. Ranger's singer seems to be going for a "maniac at the mic" sound and is often off the beat and yaps the lyrics in an annoying fashion. Maybe the lyrics were written in Finnish and the English translations don't fit the same way. I don't know, either way the songs on Where Evil Dwells sound pretty close to Crossover to me. The solos are still old-school and, as a result, are the album's clear highlight.

If Ranger wants to become a Thrash band, more power to them. For me, there's already enough (too much) "retro" Thrash available, much of it just as good as what is on Where Evil Dwells. I'm hoping this is a one-album detour and they get back to the Speed Metal since unlike Thrash, that sub-genre is under-represented.
