Well, I certainly didn't see this one coming. Death Metal is the base genre here, but Ravens Creed throw in a healthy dose of old school Death/Thrash, even blackening things up here and there. Listening to this I was sometimes reminded of Venom, Motörhead, Hellhammer and even Darkthrone in their thrashier moments. But ultimately what kills (in a good way) here is how much of a beating you get listening to this album. Heavy, pounding drums, machine-gun-like guitars and raspy growls make for a lethal combination that will have you begging for more. Lots of high-speed playing, but with the occasional slower parts. Nothing fancy, just pure in-your-face metal – this is the real deal, folks. Most of the songs are in the 2-minute range, except for closer "Carrion Screaming" which lasts 13(!) minutes – not exactly common for the genre. Bottom line – nothing particularly original, but who cares when it kills so much. Now I need to look into the band's other material. |
