It's rare an album title as aptly describes the music contained within as does Black Speed from Brooklyn, New York's Thoaat. Raw, evil proto-Black Thrash riffs and dark, raspy vocals create an atmosphere of hellishness originally spewed from the inky depths by the likes of Venom, Possessed and Slayer. Black Speed has many moments of unrepentant speed, like on "The Tortures" but Throaat knows you have to dial it back on occasion to avoid things becoming a blur. They let the hatred roll over you in a slow, glutinous inevitability on the beginning of "Explode" before cranking it up to blast-beat speed. Throaat close out this EP (the third of their short career, having formed in 2013) with a well-done cover of Venom's "In League with Satan." Old-school Speed Metal seems to be the hot genre of choice these days but as long as bands like Throaat are going to emulate the greats of the 80s so well, bring it on. |
