This should probably be illegal for how catchy it is. Walpyrgus features a majority of members from Twisted Tower Dire, with further experience drawn from October 31, While Heaven Wept, and Widow. The overall sound here isn't a million miles away from Twisted Tower Dire, although Walpyrgus' approach is more poppy than the imposing brawn displayed in Twisted Tower Dire. Walpyrgus are all about cracking vocal melodies, rollicking riffs, but above all dishing out quality songs. Each number is decadently infectious; an array of dangerous earworms wielding sugary melodies which, thanks to a brazen metal attitude, manages to remain proud and manly. A large part of this comes from Jonny Aune's fist clenching vocal performance, the dudes a beast, just listen to the middle of "Cold Cold Ground" for some Daniel Heiman levels of win. Of course the songs themselves are well written, and a lot of fun – certainly played with energy to spare. These guys sound like they're having a fucking blast. Despite being pretty short, this is some absolutely recommended listening and that goes double if you went nuts for the last Twisted Tower Dire album. The No Remorse Records package with CD and 7" is seriously sweet, great looking and great sounding, however you could try and hunt down the cassette version from Swords & Chains, which comes with the absolutely killer cover of Mercyful Fate's "Doomed By The Living Dead" – either one would make a cool addition to the collection. The bottom line is that this is a quality first release from an insanely promising band, no gimmicks or frills, just kick-ass tunes. Go get it! |
