Drakarium is an indie band from Quebec, Canada with genres like Black, Hardcore and Power/Viking on their Metal-Archives profile, but when listening to their self-titled EP it is obvious these guys are Progressive Metal with a bit of Power around the edges. There are double-kick drums and plenty of keyboards in their songs and the guitars are really low in the mix until they are asked to solo. The lyrics are in French and the vocal lines sound quite Hard Rock to me. In a lot of places, they remind me of the Japanese Hard Rock/Heavy Metal bands of the 80s, specifically Earthshaker. The time changes and keyboard flourishes are not over the top or mind-numbingly esoteric so Drakarium is accessible but there isn't anything unusual or exemplary though it is well-played. An inoffensive but ultimately generic release. |
