Five years after their third album, Chile's Nuclear give us album #4, Formula for Anarchy. The use of the word "formula" in the title is probably not intentional but it is accurate when describing Nuclear's approach to Thrash Metal: Reign in Blood. That's it, Slayer's Reign in Blood is the blueprint and Nuclear follows it to a tee. The album roars from the speakers from the start and other than the obligatory breakdown parts in some of the songs, the tempo is high right until the end. The vocals, a little lower than Tom Araya, are still a pre-Death Metal shout pierced with high-pitched screams, the drums a pummeling blur and the guitars pinched and squealed mercilessly on the solos. There aren't any killer tracks here, but no real weak songs either. I'd like to hear Nuclear do something, anything different next time, but I can't argue with how well they emulate one of the most seminal bands of the genre. So there you have it. If you like Reign in Blood, pick up Formula for Anarchy without hesitation. If that isn't your stripe of Thrash, look elsewhere. |
