Primal Fear's 11th studio album, Rulebreaker, is full of music that is the opposite of its title in that it is the same crunchy, European Power Metal the band has been known for over a nearly 20-year-long career. Primal Fear are classy songwriters, something that separates them from the masses, but we're still talking lead-lined riffs, high-pitched screams, pounding drums and the kind of choruses that are ridiculously easy to sing along with. "In Metal We Trust" rocks the double-kick drums hard while "We Walk Without Fear" proves once again that Primal Fear can write a long Power Metal song that doesn't fold under the weight of its own pretentiousness. Scheepers sounds a little older this time around and doesn't let loose with the screams as often as in the past but his mid-range is still one of the best in the business. I found this album took a few spins to open up, not unlike their last one, but once it did, I wasn't as impressed as I was with Delivering the Black. Some of the songs at the beginning of the album remained a bit bland even after several listens. Nevertheless, if Painkiller-era Priest gets your fist in the air, Primal Fear has you covered and Rulebreaker is as a solid addition to their catalog as it will be to your collection. |
