Germany's Rebellion have carved out a niche for themselves with their Heavy/Power Metal style, gravelly vocals and album themes dealing with cultures from Europe's rich history. They dealt mainly with Vikings up until 2012's Arminius: Furor Teutonicus and now 2015 sees them heading further west with Wyrd bið ful aræd - The History of the Saxons. Not as egregiously long as 2009's Arise (I'm NOT typing the whole title, I only have so much memory on my computer) it is still a pretentious title, what with the "olde English" spelling. Regardless, the music within is what we are here to talk about. If you've heard one Rebellion album, this new one won't offer you any surprises. The riffs are thick and chunky, the vocals are rough (though not as much as in the past when they were a near-Death Metal growl) and the lyrical themes attempt to be epic. The songwriting is generic with only a couple of choruses displaying any level of catchiness ("Hengist" and "Slave Religion"). There are some spoken-word links between the songs but these don't add much that can't be divined from the song titles themselves. Wyrd bið ful aræd - The History of the Saxons is a decent album that is played as well as you would expect from a band with a 15-year career but it offers nothing new or special, so if you like past Rebellion albums you'll probably like this one. If you haven't run across them before, start with their earlier releases. |
