Album number 10 from genre stalwarts (and by this point, masters) Amon Amarth. This time the Swedes opt for a concept piece, blending the sheer killing power of With Oden on Our Side with the pushed melodic sensibility of Deceiver Of Gods all wrapped up in a decidedly cinematic shell, resulting in an album both top notch in terms of quality and able to stand out as part of an impressive discography. Everything you expect from an Amon Amarth album is present, from Johan Hegg's booming vocals, to the pounding rhythms and shimmering tremolo riffs. It's all flavored with a proud sense of melody which really does the work outside of the lyrics and voice clips; painting and building a world all whilst giving off a moody yet triumphant feel. There are some truly epic moments throughout like on "Back on Northern Shores" and "One Thousand Burning Arrows" which absolutely sell everything Jomsviking is about and seem set to rank among the band's finer numbers. Of course, if you're only in town for a face smashing, then numbers like "First Kill" or "On A Sea of Blood" will descend on you like a dragon ship full of the meanest around. Jomsviking is another killer record among the Amon Amarth canon, with plenty to enjoy and little to complain about. |
