War Brigade is the ninth album from Germany's Mystic Prophecy. They still play Power/Thrash though there's a solid dose of Slayer aggressiveness in this effort, something I've not really noticed from them in the past. The riffs are solid but unspectacular and the lyrics are full of clichés like Spartans ("Good Day to Die"), vaguely satanic topics ("The Crucifix") and other bands' album titles ("Metal Brigade"), something Sabaton and countless other bands have already done. R.D. Liapakis is a talented singer and has surrounded himself with competent musicians but Mystic Prophecy is in a rut. They keep releasing the same album over and over. No one expects them to change their sound or direction completely but they need to step up the songwriting significantly or come up with a new angle that keeps things fresh without losing the core sound of the band. Dark Days is decent but you've heard it before. |
