With Whips and Chains is the second full-length from Kentucky's old school Heavy Metal band Savage Master. Everything about this band screams the 80s, from the classic guitar sound to the frantic, dexterous leads to the evil, satanic lyrical imagery. Savage Master takes a "balls-to-the-wall" approach and plays each song with a high level of energy punctuated by the shrieks of singer Stacey Savage. Dressing like Betsy Bitch, Savage sounds more like Tim Baker as she belts out vocal lines that often sound off-key. I admit it takes a bit of getting used to but after a few spins the quirkiness has grown on me. Tracks like "Vengeance is Steel" and "With Whips and Chains" are pure Traditional Heavy Metal fun and Savage Master even gets a bit epic with the Manilla Road-esque "Path of the Necromancer." With Whips and Chains is a throwback to a time when Heavy Metal was simpler, leaner and meaner. Give it a spin if U.S. Metal from the 80s makes you stand up and shout. |
