Death Metal is going strong in Finland again... I mean, really strong. This second wave of Finnish Death Metal has produced a lot of great, sheer talent-reeking bands – and surprisingly, many of these Finnish messengers of death and decay have even gotten signed by labels both in and out of Finland.

Examples abound, but one of the best proofs for this strong second coming of Finnish underground Death Metal that has crossed my path lately is this three-piece act known as Worthless, formed in 2009. Worthless released two demos until the boss of Ranka Kustannus, Riku Pääkkönen (the founder of Spinefarm Records) found them, and signed them to his label.

Grim Catharsis, Worthless' eight-track debut album, is honestly a pretty jaw-dropping package of infamous sounding, eerie and crusty Death Metal that partly has a nice and welcome punky feel to it. What is also so cool about them is that Worthless differ very drastically from the pack of their Finnish Death Metal comrades by their Hellhammer/Celtic Frost/Usurper/Furbowl dripping performance. Vocalist and guitarist Toni Pekkala must have some of Tom G. Warrior's genes in him. I mean, Toni sounds so deceptively like Mr. Warrior himself, confusing and mesmerizing all of us at the very same time by his graveling vocal performance. Oddly, the more I listen to Grim Catharsis, the more Furbowl's name seems to popping up Рand especially the band's Those Shredded Dreams era, thrown through sort of a HH/CF/Usurper mixer. The musical connection is definitely there, no doubt.

Bottom line, Worthless has recorded a truly addictive and masterful debut album and it's nearly impossible to dislike this if you are a fan of any of the other names that were mentioned here. What an amazing debut from this talented Finnish bunch!
