Beyond the Veil is the third album from Britain's Dark Forest that I've reviewed (and the band's fourth) and it is a nice improvement over 2014's The Awakening. The basic formula of Black Majesty-inspired Power Metal mixed with Iron Maiden-styled True Heavy Metal remains the foundation on which Dark Forest creates their music. The riffs are solid and powerful, taking after Maiden, while the melodies are generally "happy" and there's a good deal of speed both more in line with the Power Metal from Down Under. The songwriting has definitely improved and every single song on Beyond the Veil will have you tapping your foot or singing along in short order. Dark Forest has also upped the "epic" factor and songs like "Earthbound" and "The Lore of the Land" bring to mind the mighty Atlantean Kodex. The vocals are still not as strong as I would like for this style of Metal. They are somewhat thin, dry and the range is mainly at the high end, so they aren't as dynamic as the songs warrant. I kept imagining how Dickinson would have killed a song like "On the Edge of Twilight." In the grand scheme the vocals are a minor niggle and the overall album grades out as excellent. I hope this trend continues over the course of Dark Forest's career as they seem to be building toward something special. If you haven't given them a listen before, now is the time. |
