We Are Heavy Metal is the third album from Argentina's Feanor and it could have just as easily been titled "We Are Huge Fans of Wizard" for all the ways it is like the German band that released semi-classics like Head of the Deceiver and Odin. Big, crunchy guitars, songs about epic topics like "The Epic of Gilgamesh Pt. 1" and "Earendil the Sailor" and the staple of Power Metal, the double-kick drums, are all present. Here's the funny thing; as I was listening all I could think of was how uncannily the vocals sounded like Wizard's Sven D'Anna only to find out that it was, in fact, Sven that lent his distinctive pipes to We are Heavy Metal. I guess that explains a lot. There's nothing here that Wizard hasn't already done and none of the songs do anything in the writing or performance departments that is in any way distinctive so, if you've heard a Wizard album, you've heard this one. In fact, their use of sound effects is a bit heavy-handed and takes away from a couple of the tracks ("Water Garden", an instrumental link begins with over 60 seconds of crackling fire – we get it, you're sitting around a fire). Wizard/Sven D'Anna fans will probably want to add this to their collections but it isn't required for anyone else. |
