Northern Crown is a Floridian Doom band and The Others is their debut album. They are firmly in the later Candlemass vein with a big, somber sound, a variety of tempos that aren't all slow (thankfully) and clear vocals a la Rob Lowe. There are some added creepy/psychedelic elements that hearken back to mid-70s Black Sabbath which gives Northern Crown some measure of uniqueness. I particularly like the air of unease the band projects on the instrumental "A Pox Upon Your House" with its unusual keyboard effects. Other than that, Northern Crown songs sound a lot like those you get from any number of Candlemass albums, so unless you are a dyed-in-the-wool Doom fan I don't know how essential The Others is going to be but I certainly can hear some promise. |
