Columbia's Witchtrap have been around since 1992 and their 2015 album Trap the Witch, their fourth full-length among a host of splits and EPs is getting a cassette/vinyl/CD re-release courtesy of Hells Headbanger Records. Musically, Trap the Witch is typical retro Black/Thrash like so many other bands around today – throaty vocals, unlimited speed and satanic lyrics in the mold of early Venom and Slayer. It's all played well and there's no way you aren't throwing some horns in the air and banging your head while it is on. Witchtrap have a more melodic, NWOBHM sensibility in their songwriting as opposed to some of the other bands playing this style that lean more toward Thrash. Trap the Witch isn't quite as engaging as BAT's Wings of Chains or Bewitcher's self-titled debut, but if you dig the Black/Thrash revival it is definitely worth checking out. |
