Battle Through Time is the debut album of North Carolina natives Undrask, a band that plays a brand of Melodic Death Metal similar to Children of Bodom, Kalmah and Amon Amarth. Well-crafted riffs and heavy doses of virtuosity are the weapons of choice here, with the bass providing a good amount of support for the melodies. Frontman Steve Wynn's vocals do fit the proposal well, while not being entirely unique. Tracks like "Conscripted" and "Faceless Eyes" showcase the high level of guitar skills by the duo Darryl Dewitt and Erik Collier, who combine to form leads and riffs that flirt with the Progressive and Power Metal genres, and vicious attacks like "Champion of the Dawn" and "Primal Revelation" remind us that this is a Death Metal album after all, by being aggressive and abrasive. The space-themed lyrics, abundant in today's musical endeavors, create a fun and immersive atmosphere that is the icing on the cake. Be it fast and vicious or melodic and prolific, it doesn't matter: Battle Through Time delivers on the promise of being a great debut album by a band that – despite not doing anything new – pours with competence and feeling. Anthemic choruses, crazy solos, stellar progression...it's all here. Keep an eye on these guys. |
