Edenbridge's Solitaire is easily one of my favorite Symphonic/Power Metal albums so anything new from this Austrian band is welcome. 2013's The Bonding was the band's attempt at expanding their sound and it was not well received, so with 2017's The Great Momentum, Lanvall and crew have retreated to the familiar sounds of Solitaire, Shine and Aphelion. Lanvall's cinematic compositions are once again balanced neatly between grandeur and metal and singer Sabine Edelsbacher delivers another outstanding performance. If there is a knock on The Great Momentum, it would be just how similar to Solitaire it is. "Shiantara," the opening track is a lot like Solitaire's opening eponymous salvo with a brisk pace, crunchy riff and simple, majestic chorus. "The Moment is Now" is strikingly similar to Solitaire's "Higher" and the parallels don't end there. I'm certainly not complaining, this is the type of material that Edenbridge excel at and if this is the next logical step to get their feet back under them after The Bonding, I'm good with that. The Great Momentum is a solid and enjoyable, if unadventurous, entry in Edenbridge's canon and fans should be pleased.
