Inculter is a new Norwegian band ripping up the early blackened Thrash genre pioneered by Venom, Possessed and Hellhammer back in the 80s and revived more recently by the likes of Desaster, Witch Grave and Guerra Total. They stick to the tried and true formula of speed, loose playing and guttural pre-Death vocals on their debut album Persisting Devolution. The lyrics on tracks like "Diabolic Forest," "Pastoral Slaughter" and "Death Domain" are the early 80s "evil" kind that seemed so extreme 30 years ago but come across as tame by today's standards (still cool in a cheesy way). I certainly like this stuff and have enjoyed this style's resurgence, even the sloppy time change in the middle of "Traducers Attack" which may well have been intentional but still sounds like the drummer completely forgot what song he was playing for a few seconds. Inculter play the style well, making sure to include a big dose of Punk attitude, but there's nothing new here and the songwriting isn't particularly memorable. That means Persisting Devolution is a load of fun while it is on but isn't really a necessity to own unless retro Black/Thrash is your main genre of choice. It's not bad but I'd like to hear one of these bands do something a bit different with this style while retaining the elements that make it so much fun. Let's see if Inculter want to take up that challenge for their next album.
