Raw black metal is what Sweden's Hinsides is all about, with some passages almost sounding like rehearsal material or even just jamming. Fear not, that's a positive comment in this specific case. It's not overproduced, far from that, and that messy-ish sound is actually a plus for the music presented on this album, giving it a real in-your-face feel that you usually experience only in the live setting. There's a bit of a black 'n' roll vibe at times, and also some distinctly early '80s and even some '70s influences at play here, but not enough to pinpoint a specific band per se; it's just a period thing. When the solos kick in, it's downright messy and somehow that sounds cool as fuck and makes me want to break out the air guitar or just headbang like there's no tomorrow. The vocals are insane raspy screeches and I gave up trying to decipher anything—it's not like the lyrics are in a language I know anyway. Despite all the chaos, messiness and rawness, there's a good serving of melodic passages in here as well, and they somehow sound just as chaotic as the more metallic stuff. I hear a lot of black metal, but with this album, Hinsides sure offer a distinctive sound that's their own. Recommended if you can handle chaos. |
