Species is a Polish tech-thrash band that caught my attention with their very promising 2022 debut, To Find Deliverance. Jazzy around the edges and heavily influenced by classic Coroner and Voïvod, and with clear nods to Vektor and later-era Death, they deliver twisting, turning thrash metal loaded with technical flair. Changelings follows closely in the footsteps of its predecessor but shows more mature and coherent songwriting that rarely feels disjointed or needlessly jarring. It sounds pretty great, too. The lively bass lines weave playfully around the constantly shape-shifting guitar work, which bursts from unexpected angles at nearly all times. Bassist Piotr Drobina also handles vocal duties, and while his delivery is versatile, his vocals may be an acquired taste. He adds another distinct layer to their sound, though, and therefore suits the chaos quite well. Species aren't doing anything wildly new, but they execute this style with confidence, skill, and a refreshingly organic feel. If you like tech-thrash that prioritizes groove, unpredictability, and musicianship without disappearing into self-indulgence, Changelings is absolutely worth your time. |
