I have been listening to Evilcult's Triumph of Evil a lot the last several days, because I really enjoy black/thrash and these maniacs from Brazil do it right. The songwriting is an orthodox formula of speeding tempos and blackened, rasping howls, but what keeps me coming back is partly the sound, which has a great analog vibe, but mostly the guitars, specifically the solos. I'm not saying these guys are channeling Eddie Van Halen or Yngwie Malmsteen, but they know how to craft leads that really elevate the songs and are highly entertaining, even if you aren't a guitarist. A combo of sick, evil thrash and sparkling leadwork? Sign me up. There is a multitude of black/thrash bands out there, but with Triumph of Evil, Evilcult have put themselves in the vanguard with the likes of Bewitcher, BAT and Midnight.
