Debut full-length for this hybrid band from New York. The base here is definitely Sabbathy, but they mix in some Death/Thrash sounds and the riffs have a grooving quality that kind of reminds me of old White Zombie. The guitar sound is pretty good, even if the production is murky, but it does make for a nicely subterranean sound. The songwriting is primitive, just too repetitive and simplistic to really dig in on it. The vocals need work, as they are mostly just a kind of bored-sounding mutter. Sometimes they switch into genuine growls, and those sound a lot better. In general I think this band could go with a harder sound and lean more into the more extreme metal elements they only dabble in here. Still, some of the riffs are really good, so I think this band could go places, even if this album is just kind of a curiosity. |
