Break the Silence is the sixth full-length album from Germany's Beyond the Black, a female-fronted, symphonic metal band that has until now flown under my radar. Fans of this style expect certain things such as gorgeous vocal melodies, a lush production, cinematic songwriting, etc. and that is all here. There are also lyrics in different languages, among them French and German, as well as some electronic/dance elements that aren't too intrusive. Songs like "Ravens" and "Weltschmerz" are not the heaviest tracks you are going to find in this subgenre, though they are unquestionably lovely. "Can You Hear Me" and "Like a Hologram" bring the metal back to Beyond the Black's sound, which sounds similar to Delain and Imperia, though there is an accessible, hard rock element and a melancholy atmosphere that suggests Autumn and Evanescence. Fans of female-fronted symphonic metal are the target audience and, while Break the Silence is an album that probably won't win any new converts from other metal crowds, non-metal fans could be tempted to cross over.
