I remember back in the day when Sorcerer were a band whispered of in the underground solely on the power of their 1995 self-titled demo compilation, which was never widely released, but started making the rounds as a bootleg download and introduced people to the hidden gem this band had been. Now here we are in 2023 and we have their fourth proper full-length album, thirteen years and four albums into their second life.

This band was always firmly in the tradition of Swedish Doom like Memento Mori or Candlemass, though it has to be said they have always maintained a more Trad Metal edge with more up-tempo songs and the harder-edged vocals of Anders Engberg. Maybe they have never quite satisfied me with their new albums compared to their old stuff, but for demos there are no expectations, and when this band reformed, we expected brilliance. You can't deny the quality of the music on offer here, as this is top-tier Doom, and yet I still feel like this band could produce an absolute masterwork, and I keep hoping they will do that. Reign of the Reaper is a really good album, I just wish it was a great one.
