Melodic Black Metal is what Denmark's Orm offer on their self-titled debut album. The band strikes a fine balance between Black Metal hallmarks like raspy vocals and tremolo-picked guitars and things like keyboards and acoustic passages. There's an epic quality to the songwriting that is evident on songs like "Blood of Your Blood" which is loud and aggressive but at times the guitar is played in a way that makes me think of a giant bell or war drum. It's this and other creative touches that give Orm some similarities with bands like Summoning and Caladan Brood, if maybe a little less grand and little more feral. Either way, this is a solid debut from these Danes and needs to be heard if you enjoy taking a mental trip back to pagan battlefields and the days of yore. |
