Well, I didn't know Mutiilation was over until I came across Meyhnach and did some research. Too bad. Meyhnach is still black metal but is a huge departure from Mutiilation's sound, so there isn't much point making any comparisons. Here we are presented with a much cleaner and refined style of music that sometimes doesn't even sound metal. There are some really annoying "static" sounds here and there that are really a distraction and don't bring anything to the table (this is bad enough that I've been wondering if it's bad mp3 encoding of the promo files). But let's put that aside. Meyhnach might be light years away from Mutiilation, but the music is nonetheless dark and depressing as hell and it will haunt you in your dreams. It's kind of experimental and, quite frankly, I didn't like it at all on first listen, but going back to it a few weeks later, I found myself listening to the album over and over and slowly uncovering the various layers on offer. It might be a huge departure from Mutiilation's sound, but it's pretty damn sick. Just be forewarned that you may need to give it a few listens before it clicks. |
