I was kind of lukewarm to Meyhnach's debut album when I reviewed it nearly four years ago and I actually had to go back to it after hearing Miseria de Profundis. There was a lot of weird stuff going on in the debut, let's leave it at that. This sophomore effort is a lot more pure black metal, this time without all the annoying gimmicks of the debut. The guitars are screechy, feeling like a razor blade slicing through your eardrums, which make this quite addictive (OK, I probably wouldn't say that if actual razor blades were slicing my eardrums, but you know what I mean... ;)) The vocals are really tortured and reek of despair, the kind of stuff that reaches down and grabs you. The music is pretty damn raw, though not nearly as much as early Mütiilation, of course. It's kind of monotone in a good way, just chugging alone with a doomy, depressing vibe that will bring you down on the best of days. You guessed it, the atmosphere here is unbearable at times. If Meyhnach's goal was to mess with people's head, he sure got it right with this one. Depressing, dark, but addictive. |
